What was your first car?

I thought it would be fun to tell about our first car!  Mine was a 1959 Triumph TR3, I think I paid $600 for it.  I can't remember where I bought it but I know I had it repainted light blue and I think the paint is what kept it together!  Drove it for a year or so and that started a long list of high school and college cars!

 Larry -

Apparently '59 was a good used car year.

In  June '66 I bought my first car, a VW Beetle for $400.00. It was light blue.

When I painted it yellow in '68 my Dad asked: "Yellow!?" Nowadays there seem to be zillions of yellow vehicles on the road. Sold it in '69. Within months it was dead - casualty of an accident.

Just found this photo the other day. It was tucked  into some envelope. The right running board is gone because Dennis Reeder jumped on it clowning around one day. But thatwas nothing compared to the damage I've incurred on cars thru the years.

My first car was a 1956 Chevy convertible. I wish now that I still had it because it had many memories attached to it. The attached photo shows me standing beside it with my sister Jose and my brother Will sitting in it.

My first car was a white 1963 Corvair W/a white convertible top and a 1965 140HP motor & a 4 spd tranny.  It belonged to my college roommate, Mike Galvin, when we attended Kent State University.  He lived in Hackensack, NJ.  Come spring of 1969 KSU let out  and he needed to get back home.  But the car required some work ~ $35 IIRC.  Since he only had $25 or $30 and he could take the bus home for less than $20 he decided to sell it to me.  We settled on $40: traveling $$ and some beer $$ too!  Now there was no one poorer than a '60s college student during the last week of finals.  Since I had less than $17.00 something had to be done pronto.  So I tapped my sister who had just graduated from Bowling Green S.U. and had a "good job".  She was living in Toledo while she waited for her fiance to graduate from BGSU so they could get married & move out to San Diego.  She worked as a telephone operator and made the huge salary of $2.20/hr IIRC.  BIG BUCKS. She sent me a "congrats card" W/two $20 dollar bills in it. Handed over the cash got the car trasnferred to me and drove it around W/the top down.  I was on top of the world. Ladies who I never knew I existed suddenly wanted to talk to me.  Before I drove it home for the summer the left rear axle bearing went south.  Went to the local junk yard in Mantua, Ohio & got a good one for $10.  Since I had no tools at that time I had a local garage put it in.  Charged me $5 to do it. Loved that  car.  Even took it on the first KSU sponsered road rally in April of 1970 & won it.  Now when I buy a new pair of shoes I marvel at their price vs. the cost of my first car !!!
